MPIC Student Council present Golden Chalk 2024 summer terms awards for Commitment and Excellence in Teaching

TUM, Diversity, Bioscience, Chemistry, Physics, Award | 17.09.2024

Golden Chalk prizes went to School of Natural Sciences (NAT) staff in Chemistry and Physics for their commitment to students and teaching. The awards were announced at the Day of Physics and at the Graduation Ceremony of the Chemistry Department by the Mathematics/Physics/Informatics/Chemistry Student Council (MPIC).

The MPIC, which offers services to improve study conditions and student life on campus, relies on lecture surveys to select the winners in Chemistry and Physics.

Best teaching in Bachelor’s program in Chemistry: Prof. Tom Nilges (General & Inorganic Chemistry)

In their commendation, students remarked, "Through his hands-on lectures, packed with experiments and humorous anecdotes, he consistently succeeds in exciting new first-year students about their field of study." Prof. Nilges thanked his entire research group and the students for this award.

Best teaching in the Master’s program in Chemistry: Prof. Angela Casini (Pharmaceutical Radiochemistry)

Students praised, "Her course covers many innovative topics, which are almost unanimously recognized by students as particularly exciting thanks to her dedicated teaching style. The learning atmosphere, with plenty of room for questions and discussions, is also highly praised." Prof. Casini thanked her entire team and the MPIC Student Council for this award.

Special commitment to Chemistry students: Dr. Markus Drees

Students raised Drees’s exceptional service to students, "In addition to his already demanding responsibilities as the Managing Director of the Graduate Center, Secretary of the Chemistry Examination Committee, long-serving representative of the mid-level faculty on the School Council, and as one of the organizers of today's event, our awardee has served as the primary contact for students during times of significant staffing shortages and vacancies in the Chemistry Student Office." Dr. Drees expressed his heartfelt thanks to all the students and the MPIC Student Council for this award.

Best teaching in the Bachelor’s program in Physics: Prof. Sherry Suyu (Experimental Physics 1 in English)

The excellent learning environment combined with Prof. Suyu's competence and friendly manner were highlighted by the MPIC.

Best teaching in the Master’s program in Physics: Dr. Hristo Iglev (Photonics and Ultrafast Physics 1 & 2)

The laudation praised Iglev’s passion for the subject, as well as the lab tours and guest lectures he conducted.

Best exercise class instructor in Physics: Dr. Carl-Friedrich Kreiner (Analysis for Physicists 1-3)

Kreiner is notable for good organization, as well as his instructive and entertaining central exercises. He is seen as a very motivated lecturer, deeply invested in the success of his students.

Best tutorial in Physics: Sebastian Gräff (Analysis for Physicists 1 & 2)

His clear explanations and answers to student questions, along with his helpfulness outside of the tutorial, were considered outstanding.

We extend our congratulations to all the award recipients and express our sincere thanks for their outstanding commitment!
