Electronics in Physics (building 5100)

The Electronics department offers a wide range of services. In addition to technical services, we advise bachelor's and master's students on specific issues and support aspiring scientists by imparting practical knowledge in the areas of laboratory measurement technology and data acquisition.

Our fields of work

We develop assemblies and devices according to your specifications and requirements. All necessary steps, from the initial idea to technical implementation, production, and documentation, are carried out in close collaboration with the respective scientists to ensure optimal results.

We are happy to advise you on all questions related to electronics, for example, to assist you with the use of modern tools (layout and simulation) as well as with programming FPGAs and microcontrollers.

In our department, SMD boards are assembled and soldered on one or both sides according to customer requirements. Thanks to our close contact with the circuit designer, we can also fulfill special requests promptly, such as assembling a test sample in advance, followed by a small series production after testing.

Brief information

Due to the high complexity of the process, we ask that you allow sufficient time in advance to clarify details (such as data transfer, component provision, stencils, and board layout).

Our range of services in brief:

  • SMD components up to 0402, BGAs up to 0.5mm pitch, fine pitch
  • Fully automated assembly with DIMA fully automated systems
  • Roll feeders, bar holders, and custom-made trays for component placement
  • Optical alignment of components
  • Lead-free soldering process (240 degrees Celsius), lead-containing soldering for special applications (satellites) upon request
  • Gentle vapor phase soldering thanks to uniform heating of the components, eliminating the problems associated with infrared soldering

Component provision

We only use taped components. We supply passive components (resistors) in 0402 (E24 series), 0603 (partially E12 series), and 0805 (E12 series). Ceramic capacitors are available in selected sizes; please inquire about special sizes.

Active components (ICs, voltage regulators, transistors, etc.) must always be provided by the customer.

Please contact us in advance to select packaging suitable for machine use.

We maintain our own warehouse for in-house developments within the department, which can also be used by all working groups as a service.

Our warehouse is available to you as follows:

MondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFriday
9:00 - 11:309:00 - 11:30–9:00 - 11:30–
13:00 - 15:3013:00 - 15:3013:00 - 15:3013:00 - 15:30–

We are happy to assist in urgent cases outside of opening hours.

A wide range of components is always available, and we are happy to assist with the procurement of special components. Components not in stock can be placed for order and will be promptly ordered with our standard orders.

Our component inventory is only a sample and does not claim to be complete. If you have specific questions, our staff will be happy to assist you:

  • Passive Components:
    • Resistors (load, wirewound, metal film, potentiometers) - also in SMD 0402, 0603, and 0805

Used batteries and accumulators (including those from UPSs, etc.) can be dropped off for disposal at the warehouse.

Please register larger quantities (especially Li-ion or Lead-acid batteries) in advance to ensure proper storage.

Please note: For purchases in the warehouse, an internal order form with a signature is required (one order form per work group for work group-oriented purchasing). Billing is based on the fill level on the order form.

Many devices used in laboratories are difficult to replace in the relevant areas. In the event of failures, we can often provide quick and competent assistance, regardless of whether the problem involves power supplies, complex measuring devices, or entire X-ray systems.

The following information is essential for a successful repair approach:

  • Technical documentation/circuit diagram: If available, please include it!
  • Operating instructions: these often contain important information
  • Precise description of the defect ("no longer works" is unfortunately not sufficient)
  • Are identical working devices available?
  • If a self-built device from a diploma or doctoral thesis: Is old documentation available?

We are also happy to attempt to repair devices that are no longer supported by the manufacturer or whose manufacturer no longer exists.
