The City Cycling program was initiated in Germany in 2008 by the Climate Alliance. The German competition takes place from May 1st to September 30th, whereby every participating community has a set 21-day period for the competition. Participants automatically register the number of kilometers they cycle using an app. The idea is to get people active, reduce CO2 emissions, and use the collected data to improve cycling conditions within communities. Besides Germany, such city cycling programs also take place in Denmark, France, and the USA.
This year, the competition in Garching took place from June 29th until July 19th. The TUM School of Natural Sciences participated in the competition forming its own team “TUM NAT” separate from the general TUM team. Consisting of 33 cyclists, the team managed to cover a total of 10,761 kilometers, on average 326 km per cyclist. Great leadership was shown by NAT School Dean Prof. Johannes Barth (947 km) and School Manager Dr. Joachim Diener (1325 km). The end results put team TUM NAT in 6th place out of 58 teams within the community of Garching, and in 22nd place out of 716 teams within the Munich region. Well done!
Interested in participating? Every kilometer counts! Keep an eye out for an email and join our NAT team next year to see if we can beat this year’s results.
