The General Assembly of the National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) has elected Prof.Thomas Brück from the TUM School of Natural Sciences at the Technical University of Munich as a new member. The official presentation of his membership certificate is scheduled to take place on October 20, 2026, in Berlin.
In relation to the role of biotechnology and the bioeconomy in addressing global challenges, Prof. Brück emphasizes the necessity of joint research efforts: “Global challenges such as climate change and sustainable economic activity to maintain Germany’s industrial base—without exceeding the planet’s ecological boundaries—require transdisciplinary research approaches and technological developments. Industrial biotechnology and the bioeconomy play a central role in this scenario. I am therefore pleased to contribute my expertise in these areas to acatech, in order to work with colleagues from various disciplines on developing research and innovation strategies that can inform political frameworks. It is these strategies that will enable us to offer future generations a life in Germany and Europe without ecological or economic compromises.“
acatech sees itself as a “working academy” that provides independent, evidence-based, and public-interest-oriented advice to policymakers and society on issues related to technological change. Its mission is to actively promote innovation and sustainability in Germany.
With the election of Prof. Brück, another member of TUM joins the ranks of this renowned academy. Previous acatech members from TUM in the field of chemistry include Prof. Herrmann, Prof. Schmidbauer, Prof.Plank, Prof. Rieger, and Prof. Lercher – all leading scientists in their respective fields.
