The Otto Warburg Medal is regarded as the highest award for biochemists and molecular biologists in Germany. Seven of the prize-winners have also received the Nobel Prize. Since 2007, the Medal has been endowed with prize money of 25,000 euros, sponsored exclusively by Elsevier and its flagship title Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA).
The Otto Warburg Medal is intended to commemorate the outstanding achievements of the eminent researcher Otto Heinrich Warburg. The German biochemist received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1931.
