The importance of grit in science

Prof. Karen Alim, Vice Dean of Talent Management and Diversity and Professor of Biological Physics and Morphogenesis in the School of Natural Sciences, spoke with GEO magazine on the importance of grit in scientific research for an article entitled “¡Diligence or talent? We just have to want to succeed” published in the March edition of the periodical.

“Diligence does not have a good reputation”, according to Alim. In science, she says, “professional setbacks are part of the journey, and you have to know how to deal with them.” Talent in itself is good, yet on the road to scientific achievement, grit is indispensable. Indeed, it may even be contagious.
