In the renowned QS World University Rankings by Subject, TUM is among the top 20 universities in the world for the first time in both natural sciences (18th place) and engineering & technology (19th place). In the rankings for six individual subjects, it ranks in the top 25. In six other subjects it places among the top 50 universities.
The British university service provider QS Quacquarelli Symonds compiles its university rankings through surveys of academics and companies. It collects data on the number of citations of published papers as an indicator of the quality of research and also takes into account the international research networks of the surveyed institutions. These indicators are weighted according to the prevailing culture in the various subject areas.
In the latest edition, TUM is once again the best German university in the areas of natural sciences (18th place) and engineering & technology (19th place). It ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide in both areas for the first time.
In the following six individual subjects, TUM placed among the top 25 universities:
- Data Science & Artificial Intelligence: 20
(1st in Germany) - Chemistry: 22
(1st in Germany) - Statistics & Operational Research: 22
(1st in Germany) - Electrical & Electronic Engineering: 23
(1st in Germany) - Physics & Astronomy: 23
(1st in Germany) - Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering: 25
(2nd in Germany)
In another six subjects, TUM is among the top 50:
- History of Art: 21 – 50
(1st in Germany) - Architecture / Built environment: 29
(2nd in Germany) - Materials Science: 31
(2nd in Germany) - Computer Science & Information Systems: 35
(1st in Germany) - Civil & Structural Engineering: 36
(1st in Germany) - Agriculture & Forestry: 45
(3rd in Germany)
In the latest QS World University Rankings, which show overall ratings for universities including further indicators, TUM is ranked 28th making it the best German university for the tenth time in a row.
The excellent research and teaching at TUM is also reflected in other subject rankings. In the most recent THE World University Rankings by Subject, it placed 14th worldwide in Computer Science, 19th in Physical Sciences, 22nd in Engineering, 31st in Business and Economics, 34th in Life Sciences, 42nd in Education and 53rd in Medicine and Health.
In the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (Shanghai Rankings), TUM is among the top 10 in remote sensing, agricultural sciences and biotechnology and among the top 50 in further subjects.
