Teacher Training: 10th Ernst Otto Fischer Seminar in Burghausen

Public Outreach, Teacher Training, Chemistry | 21.10.2024

On October 17th and 18th, the 10th Ernst Otto Fischer Seminar for teacher training took place in Raitenhaslach. Since 2012, the seminar has been held annually in autumn, pausing during the Corona pandemic, under the scientific guidance of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in collaboration with the Aventinus-Gymnasium Burghausen and WACKER AG. The organizer on behalf of TUM is Fritz E. Kühn, Professor of Molecular Catalysis at the TUM School of Natural Sciences.

The goal of the seminar, established in 2012, is to provide Bavarian chemistry teachers with access to the latest research findings, enabling them to incorporate current research content into their teaching at their schools. The speakers include professors, mainly from TUM and employees of WACKER Chemie AG or other chemical companies, who present the current state of their research. The program is complemented by an excursion to one of the chemistry plants located in the vicinity of Burghausen.

This year, Prof. Rudolf Staudigl, longtime CEO of WACKER AG, was honored by Prof. Fritz Kühn for his contributions to establishing and financing the seminar. Following this, Dr. Martina Schulze-Adams (Senior Vice President Corporate R & D, WACKER AG) gave a talk on the "Transformation in the Chemical Industry." Prof. Johannes Lercher (TUM) joined via Zoom and discussed the role of catalysis in the energy transition.

During a joint lunch, participants had the opportunity to further explore the topics of the lectures. In the afternoon, PD Dr. Alexander Pöthig (TUM) presented on molecular machines, before Prof. Kühn concluded the first day of the seminar with a lecture on synthetic accessways to rhenium based molecular catalysts.

The second day began with a tour of the WACKER plant, followed by a lunch. Afterward, Prof. Johann Plank (TUM) gave a lecture on the technological challenges of carbon capture and storage. The seminar concluded with a talk given by Dr. Dieter Hoffmann (TUM) on “The SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic – What Can We Learn for the Future?”
