Prof. Tao Zhang is the recipient of the 2025 Dr. Karl Wamsler Innovation Award "for his pioneering research on single-atom catalysis". The prize is endowed with 50,000 euros. Zhang is full professor at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP), director of the Laboratory of Catalysts and New Materials of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Dalian (PR China), and vice-president of the CAS.
He has gained international recognition for coining the concept “Single-Atom Catalysis” in 2011. His team demonstrated the presence of isolated single atoms on surfaces and examined their catalytic activity. Zhang has won many national and international awards for his outstanding contributions, such as the Advance of Catalysis Award of the Asian-Pacific Association of Catalysis Societies, the ChinaNano Award, the National Invention Prize, the Distinguished Award of CAS, the 2024 Future Science Prize, and, most recently, he was listed as a Clarivate Citation Laureate for 2025.
Tao Zhang will receive the award at a symposium on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the TUM Catalysis Research Center and the 10th Dr. Karl Wamsler Innovation Award, which will take place July 22-24, 2026.
