J. J. Sakurai Prize for Theoretical Particle Physics 2024 for Prof. Andrzej J. Buras

Award, Physics | 08.11.2023

Prof. Dr. Andrzej J. Buras is the distinguished recipient of the J. J. Sakurai Prize for Theoretical Particle Physics 2024, awarded by the American Physical Society. This esteemed accolade, which has been bestowed for nearly four decades, is making its debut in Germany in 2024, and it has found its first home at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). The members of the TUM School of Natural Sciences extend their warmest congratulations to Andrzej Buras for this remarkable achievement!

Professor Dr. Andrzej J. Buras has been selected by the American Physical Society to receive the J. J. Sakurai Prize for Theoretical Particle Physics 2024. He is being recognized "for his exceptional contributions to quark-flavor physics, particularly for his pioneering work in developing and executing calculations of higher-order QCD effects in electroweak transitions, as well as for establishing crucial phenomenological connections between kaons, D mesons, and B mesons."

This prestigious accolade, awarded annually by the American Physical Society for nearly four decades, is being granted in Germany for the first time in 2024. The J. J. Sakurai Prize is often conferred upon two to four scientists simultaneously, and Andrzej Buras is only the fourth European scientist to receive this honor as an individual. The selection committee has bestowed the Sakurai Prize upon Andrzej Buras "for his extraordinary contributions to quark-flavor physics, particularly his groundbreaking work in developing and executing calculations of higher-order QCD effects in electroweak transitions and for establishing critical phenomenological connections between kaons, D mesons, and B mesons." With the presentation of the Sakurai Prize to Andrzej Buras, this prestigious recognition is awarded to a scientist affiliated with a German research institution for the first time. The prize comprises a monetary award of $10,000, a certificate detailing the celebrated contributions, and travel expenses to attend the award ceremony. The prize is generously sponsored by the family and friends of the particle physicist J. J. Sakurai and has been presented annually since 1985.

The members of the TUM School of Natural Sciences convey their heartfelt congratulations to Andrzej Buras on this exceptional honor!
